  • 1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 3 tablespoons molasses
  • 1 1/3 cups bread flour
  • 2/3 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/3 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Red Star Active Dry Yeast
  • 1/2 cup walnuts

Medium Loaf (1 1/2-pound bread machine)

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 4 tablespoons molasses
  • 2 cups bread flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 (0.25oz) package (7g) or 2 1/4 teaspoons Red Star Active Dry Yeast
  • 3/4 cup walnuts

Large Loaf (2-pound bread machine)

  • 1 1/4 cups plus 2 tablespoons water
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 5 tablespoons molasses
  • 2 2/3 cups bread flour
  • 1 1/3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2/3 cup old-fashioned rolled oats (plus additional for topping)
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon Red Star Active Dry Yeast
  • 1 cup walnuts

Instructions

  • Have liquid ingredients at 80°F and all other ingredients, except walnuts, at room temperature. Place ingredients in pan in the order recommended by manufacturer. Select basic cycle and medium/normal crust. Walnuts can be added 5 minutes before the end of the last kneading cycle. Check dough consistency after 5 minutes of kneading. The dough should be in a soft, tacky ball. If it is dry and stiff, add water, 1/2 to 1 tablespoon at a time. If it is too wet and sticky, add 1 tablespoon of flour at a time.
  • Remove bread from pan when cycle is complete; cool on wire rack.
