2-1/4 teaspoons or one 1/4-ounce packet  Active Dry Yeast

What to Do

Bread Machine Method

  1. Make sure water is at 80°F, and all other ingredients are room temperature.
  2. Place the liquid measuring cup on a level surface so that the measuring lines can be read at eye level.
  3. Measure water and pour it into the bread pan.
  4. Measure oil and add to water in the bread pan.
  5. Select the one and the one-fourth dry measuring cups. To measure flour, first stir the flour to loosen it and then spoon it into the dry measuring cup. Level off with the flat side of a table knife. Add to ingredients in the bread pan.
  6. Measure the sugar and salt and add to ingredients on top of the flour.
  7. Add the yeast, making sure it does not touch the salt or sugar.
  8. Select the Dough / Manual setting and start the machine.
  9. At the end of the kneading cycle, press STOP/CLEAR; remove dough and proceed with rising, shaping, and baking instructions.

Hand-Held Mixer Method

  1. Combine yeast, 1 cup flour, sugar, and salt.
  2. Combine water and oil; heat to 120° to 130°F.
  3. Combine dry mixture and liquid ingredients in mixing bowl on low speed. Add egg. Beat 2 to 3 minutes on medium speed.
  4. BY HAND, stir in enough remaining flour to make a firm dough.
  5. Knead on floured surface 5 to 7 minutes or until smooth and elastic. Use additional flour if necessary.

Stand Mixer Method

  1. Combine yeast, 1 cup flour, sugar, and salt.
  2. Combine water and oil; heat to 120° to 130°F.
  3. Combine dry mixture and liquid ingredients in mixing bowl with paddle or beaters for 4 minutes on medium speed. Add egg; beat 1 minute.
  4. Gradually add remaining flour and knead with dough hook(s) 5 to 7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Use additional flour if necessary.

Rising, Shaping, and Baking

  1. Place dough in lightly greased bowl.  Cover with plastic wrap and place in refrigerator.
  2. Flatten dough about 2 hours after chilling.
  3. Continue to refrigerate dough until thoroughly chilled. Dough may be refrigerated up to 24 hours.
  4. When you are almost ready to create dinosaurs, remove dough from the refrigerator.
  5. Divide the dough into 6 equal portions. Using your hands and your imagination, shape the dough pieces into prehistoric creatures.
  6. Place on a lightly greased cookie sheet; let rise 20 minutes or until double in size.
  7. Lightly brush dinosaurs with egg wash (1 egg whisked together with 1 tablespoon water).
  8. Bake in preheated oven at 375°F for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. Remove from cookie sheet; cool on rack.

BAKER’S NOTE: Cutting dough with scissors or knife will help make the features of the animal more pronounced. Pricking the dough with a fork before baking helps to give realistic details and prevents the dough from excessive stretch marks.
